04/08/2010 - Success story

Hadley Pollard, a former Acorn student, has recently opened up a new Gym in Walsden. The Gym originally opened 4 months ago as a free weights room, but has since expanded and now has a new cardio fitness room. Hadley currently has the gym opened from 10am till 10pm every day, but will soon be having shower and changing rooms fitted to the facility. Doing so means the Gym can then open at 6.30am, allowing the early birds to exercise before starting work.

Hadley trained at the Acorn Centre to attain his health and safety and first aid certificates, which are essential for anyone who wants to open a gym as a business. He also participated in the door supervisor’s course and acquired the necessary skills to becoming a fully qualified doorman.

For more information about the Gym and its prices, please contact Hadley on 075 0673 6641

20/08/2010 - Future Jobs Fund Celebration Day

As it is coming to the end of the first group of future jobs fund employees here at the acorn centre, we are holding a celebration day for the members of staff who have worked with us for the past six months and would like to thank them for their services.

The whole day is planned to be a celebration of Future Jobs Fund Employees and everything they have achieved whilst working with us. The skills they already have and those they have acquired. We will be talking about the seven FJF's employees who have now gained employment and their futures.

We invite all who can attend to join us on this special occasion and bid them farewell.

06/07/2010 - ACORN EMPLOYEES LOOKING TO IMPRESS

Since February the Future Jobs Fund scheme has allowed the Acorn Centre to create fifty new jobs for long term unemployed people in Todmorden and the wider Calderdale area. Many of these are highly qualified with a wealth of experience, whilst for others it has provided them with their first opportunity to work. All employees are now working between 25 and 30 hours per week and have gained work ethic and enthusiasm along with new skills and qualifications. Twenty of these are now coming to the end of their six months contract with the Acorn Centre and are willing and able to progress to new employers.

The Acorn Centre is now looking for likely employers to offer employment to this group of talented people. For the last few weeks of their contract with the Acorn Centre, employers can ‘test drive’ potential employees at their organisation with the Acorn Centre paying their weekly wages. “This gives employer and potential employee chance to get to know each other before a firm job offer is given,” says Catherine Leedham, the Operations Manager. “It has been a wonderful project to have been involved with, and to help fifty people get back into work is reward in itself”.

Any employers interested in finding out more and would like the opportunity to ‘test drive’ a potential employee should contact Kevin on 01706 839746 or call in at the Acorn Centre on Burnley Road and meet the staff.

They were here along with a long list of other notaries and the great general public to join in our Youth Celebration Day as well as to commemorate the 65th anniversary of V.E.Day. Volunteers and members of St.Dunstans charity who support blind ex-Service men and women were also there to lend their support. The day was a great success with a B.B.Q, a band, jugglers and magicians on hand to entertain the crowd. A big thanks to all those who took part and gave their time.

17/04/2010 - As well as the Door Supervisor course Cliff has also been running a Safety Stewarding course at Sento House.

Cliff reports ;
"On Friday, the lads were buzzing after going to Accrington Stanley Football Ground on Tuesday and so I asked if they wanted to go on Saturday which they all jumped at!!! We had 5 including me, Accy Stanley were really grateful to us for coming along and gave us some jobs that the lads dealt with very well. So well that we have been invited back for a 'top game' on the 4th May; Burnley reserves vs Blackburn reserves. I hope to take a couple of car loads."

03/03/2010 - The first stage of employment has begun and the Acorn Centre staff number has risen dramatically. We have taken on staff in a number of areas including environmental workers, designers, catering staff, drivers and administration.

Jan/2010 - As Todmorden is a "hot spot" for unemployment up to 30% of the jobs can be for over 25s.  This is a very exciting time for the Acorn Centre and Todmorden.

Dec/2009 - The Acorn Centre has been successful in gaining Future Jobs Fund, in partnership with Calderdale Council and Halifax Opportunities Trust, to create sustainable employment in the Upper Valley for 48 long term unemployed people.
